Light five candles for five times ‘Or’ (light)

Grab a HUGE Mitzvah during Elul!!

On the 25th day of Elul the world was created. The Ben Ish Chai explains that on this day (the 25th day of Elul) the same light that was reveled on the first day of creation is revealed again on this day!

The Ben Ish Chai calls is the light of mercy!

In order for us to benefit from this light, the Ben Ish Chai teaches that we should light five candles for each time the word ‘Ohr’ (light) is read in the first five verses of the Torah and after that to give charity. Recommended in the increments of 18 (Chai) times 5 or 68 (Chaim = Life). By doing that we can connect to this light on this powerful day and enjoy the abundance of mercy and blessings from Hashem, days before Rosh Hashana!

What should be done:

(Best on Sunday night but can be done all day on Monday)

  1. Read the verses from Tanach – Can be found below.

  2. Light five candles while you recite the first five verses of the Torah. You light each candle when you say the word ‘Ohr’. (You can also light all five candles and then recite the verses). The verses cab be found below.

  3. Give charity. Recommended 18×5 = 90 | Or 68×5 = 340. or similar increments – Click here to give charity

  4. Do Teshuva (Repent)

  5. Pray to Hashem from your heart and thank him for everything he gives you!

  6. Learn Torah, read Tehilim, do good deeds!

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֖ים יְהִי־א֑וֹר וַֽיְהִי־אֽוֹר – בראשית א׳/ג׳

אֱלֹהִ֥ים הֲשִׁיבֵ֑נוּ וְהָאֵ֥ר פָּ֜נֶ֗יךָ וְנִוָּשֵֽׁעָה – תהילים פ׳/ד׳

אֱלֹהִ֗ים יְחָנֵּ֥נוּ וִֽיבָֽרְכֵ֑נוּ יָ֚אֵ֥ר פָּנָ֖יו אִתָּ֣נוּ סֶֽלָה – תהילים סז׳/ב׳

Recite these verses before lighting.

 

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. – Bereshit 1/3

O God, return us; cause Your countenance to shine and we shall be saved. – Tehilim 80/4

God will be gracious to us and bless us; He will cause His countenance to shine with us forever. – Tehilim 67/2

The Lord is God, and He gave us light. Bind the sacrifice with ropes until [it is brought to] the corners of the altar. – Tehilim 118/27

For You light my lamp; the Lord, my God, does light my darkness. – Tehilim 18/29

For with You is the source of life; in Your light we will see light. – Tehilim 36/10

“O house of Jacob, come and let us go in the light of the Lord.” – Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 2/5

Then recite these verse and light a candle each time you say the word light

1. In the beginning of God’s creation of the heavens and the earth.
2. Now the earth was astonishingly empty, and darkness was on the face of the deep, and the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the water.
3. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
4. And God saw the light that it was good, and God separated between the light and between the darkness.
5. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night, and it was evening and it was morning, one day.
