Rosh Chodesh Nissan prayer

Special prayer for Erev Rosh Chodesh Nissan

This special prayer from the Shelah Hakadosh (Rabbi Yeshayahu Halevi Horowitz) to be recited on Erev Rosh Chodesh Nissan. The prayer is for thanking Hashem for everything he gives us and how generous Hashem is with us.

If recited after the Mincha prayer one can add also the ‘Avinu Malkenu’ prayer

One should also recite three (3) chapters of Tehilim 83, 130, 142 (which can be found below)

Since our custom is to fast on Erev Rosh Chodesh for our prayers to be accepted, we can either fast or redeem our fast with charity!

English translation

You are the God who feeds from the horns of rams to the eggs of lice, and you are the one who provides all their needs, and in addition to their necessary needs, you are the one who gives fulfillment, prosperity, wealth, and honor. All this you do with the charity of your good heart. Because you are truly generous, not like what is sometimes thought of a generous person, because his generosity is not true. He pays a reward for the sake of a good they have received. Indeed, who preceded you and you paid, and with the charity of your good heart – you are good and benevolent to all.

And to me, I am your servant, you have favored everything for me, and you have given me wealth and honor from your hand, you have blessed me with everything and everything, you have given me many books, and silver and gold in abundance, and clothed with honor and dwelling in glory, I am humbled from all the graces that you have done to your servant. I am terrified for my soul that the wealth you reserved for me would harm me and feed me the little from the merits I earned, and if it is so, please take my blessing and let me not see any lack in the world to come, the eternal world, and if your goodwill is for love and not by measure, put in my heart and in the hearts of all that are dependent on me not to use your gifts for physical pleasures, but for the sustenance of the people of the Torah, kosher people, and decent people, doing a lot of charity and reciprocating kindnesses to relatives and those who are far away, and the words of Hashem will be done.

A psalm, a song of Asaph

O God, have no silence, do not be silent and do not be still, O God

For behold, Your enemies stir, and those who hate You raise their heads

Against Your people they plot cunningly, and they take counsel against Your protected ones

They said, “Come, let us destroy them from [being] a nation, and the name of Israel will no longer be remembered.”

For they have taken counsel with one accord; against You they form a pact

The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites

Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre

Also Assyria joined them; they were the arm of the children of Lot forever

Do to them as [to] Midian; as [to] Sisera, as [to] Jabin in the brook Kishon

They were destroyed in En-Dor; they were [as] dung on the ground

Make them, their nobles, as Oreb and as Zeeb, and as Zebah and as Zalmuna all their princes

Who said, “Let us inherit for ourselves the dwellings of God.”

My God, make them like thistles, like stubble before the wind

As a fire that burns in a forest and as a flame that burns mountains

So will You pursue them with Your tempest, and with Your whirlwind You will terrify them

Fill their faces with shame, and they will seek Your countenance, O Lord

Let them be ashamed and terrified forever; let them be disgraced and perish

Let them know that You-Your name alone is the Lord, Most High over all the earth

A song of ascents. From the depths I have called You, O Lord

O Lord, hearken to my voice; may Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications

O God, if You keep [a record of] iniquities, O Lord, who will stand?

For forgiveness is with You, in order that You be feared

I hoped, O Lord; yea, my soul hoped, and I wait for His word

My soul is to the Lord among those who await the morning, those who await the morning

Israel, hope to the Lord, for kindness is with the Lord and much redemption is with Him

And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities

A maskil of David, when he was in the cave, a prayer

[With] my voice, I cry out to the Lord; [with] my voice, I supplicate the Lord

I pour out before Him my speech; my distress I recite before Him

When my spirit enwraps itself upon me, and You know my path. In whichever way I go, they have hidden a snare for me

Looking to the right, I see that no one recognizes me; escape is lost from me; no one seeks my soul

I cried out to You, O Lord; I said, “You are my refuge, my lot in the land of the living.”

Hearken to my cry for I have become very low; save me from my pursuers for they have overpowered me

Take my soul out of confinement to give thanks to Your name; because of me the righteous will crown You, because You will recompense me
